Legend has it, the Earl's gambling habit required finger food he could eat while remaining at the card table. This was mid 18th century England when his demographic (wealthy, white and well-connected) considered a light lunch to be a multi- course meal of jugged hare, oysters and a large side of beef. The idea of walking about with cheese and meat sandwiched between slices of bread was a concept dangerously disruptive to social order. However, once society came to accept this revolutionary, more portable, attitude to food, civilization's catering department has become untethered from the dinning room to where we are today with takeout, drive-thrus and dejeuner sur l'herbe for all.
The 4th Earl's small ask has had significant consequences.
